Divided into five sessions, this course teaches how to investigate various art mediums using familiar materials (acrylics, mediums, ink, water-soluble colored pencils, various papers, brush types, and more). Every participant will create their own reference guide covering different material types and complete an observational artwork designed to serve as a practical guide for their ongoing artistic journey.

Syllabus

Session 1: Exploring Materials & Creating Reference Guides

Before putting paint to paper, we will understand the true nature of both. Through a "buffet" of materials, we will explore key properties: absorbency, application styles, creative techniques, and material limitations. Participants will assemble personal reference guides during this hands-on research to document these insights for future work.

Session 2: Material Research & Painting Techniques

We will bridge material understanding with various artistic techniques, focusing on how specific physical properties interact with observational drawing and painting methods to build independent creative confidence.

Session 3: Painting Techniques & Master Copies

Continuing our integration of materials and technique, we will analyze and replicate work by the Great Masters. Copying masterworks acts as a visual textbook, allowing us to learn their artistic language and expand our own creative toolset.

Session 4: Still Life

Participants will learn how to set up a still life composition and produce an observational artwork utilizing all the techniques and material knowledge covered so far.

Session 5: Still Life Completion & Summary Discussion

We will finalize the still life project and conclude with a comprehensive review of all material research, techniques, and concepts learned throughout the course.

About the Instructor

Michal Rejwan has been a painter for over 20 years, with a background in university chemistry, an art materials researcher, and a tattoo artist. Michal has specialized in classical realistic art in Israel and abroad, served as the resident artist for "Arta," and led numerous workshops on producing art materials. In her work, she connects science and physical medium to refine her craft, bringing immense energy, passion, specialized professional knowledge, and curiosity to her teaching.
