Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese art of repairing ceramic vessels using gold or silver, a process that requires patience, precision, and attention to detail. In the workshop, we will delve into the materials and methods used to restore broken vessels, as well as the cultural and philosophical background that underpins this unique Japanese approach. We will learn how to transform the fracture into a focus of beauty and meaning through decoration with gold or silver.

Participation in the workshop includes a high-quality personal work kit for long-term use.

The workshop is suitable for all levels: no previous experience is necessary.

Matan Shamai will guide the course. He is a contemporary ceramic artist, a graduate of the Department of Ceramics and Glass Design at Bezalel. His work combines diverse materials and methods, and he has won several awards and scholarships, including the Sylvie Nisbet Award for Excellence, the Bezalel Tag for Environment and Community for the final project Re-Cycle, and the First Studio Scholarship from Beit Binyamini – the Center for Contemporary Ceramics. Shamai exhibits in group exhibitions in Israel and internationally, and teaches ceramic design and handcrafting.
